Ready to Hit the Water? 4 Essential Checks Before Boat Season
Get your engine, fuel, hull and gear ready for summer on the water
For a lot of Kiwi boaties, Labour Weekend is when the season kicks off. If your boat has spent winter in the shed or on the trailer, a bit of prep now is much cheaper than a breakdown on the first long weekend.
Here are four jobs worth doing before you launch the boat or fire up the jet ski.
1. Check the engine and fuel
Marine engines and fuel systems are prone to corrosion and deposit build-up, especially after months of sitting. Before the first launch:
Check the fuel. If it has sat for a long time, check your owner’s manual on whether it needs replacing.
Inspect hoses, clamps and filters for cracks, leaks or wear.
Change the oil if it’s due, following the manufacturer’s service schedule.

2. Clean up the hull and surfaces
